You can make tab 2 the split view by refactoring the code, not difficult, but just have to make some changes in the code to get the correct behavior ...If you get the code, you will see the few changes and should  be able to switch them around

Last item I am not sure about, you can probably tweak it, but be careful not to break something else</description>

An alternative could be: name your files per language and load them based on a user preference eg. user likes English and you load the English plist (mystrings_en.plist).

Another alternative could be to import your plist files in the SQLite database, using the user preference and with the correct query you get the localized string. You need a table with the possible strings and various tables (per language) connect through foreign keys to get the matching translation...</description>
